About Sound Test

Sound Test is a set of free tools for checking speakers, headphones, subwoofers and microphones in the browser. Nothing is installed and no audio file is downloaded: every tone, sweep and noise is generated on your device by the browser's Web Audio engine as it plays. See all the tools.

The same person runs Dead Pixel Test, which does for screens what this site does for sound: a set of browser-based checks for the faults a display can have, with no install and nothing uploaded. If you have just bought a monitor or a laptop, it is the other half of the same check.

What the tools can and cannot tell you

The tools answer questions you can hear the answer to — is the left speaker working, are the channels swapped, where does the bass stop — and leave the judgement to your ears. They do not measure anything in absolute terms, because the hardware in a laptop, a phone or a headset is not calibrated.

That is why the microphone meter shows a relative level in dBFS — how close the signal is to the loudest value the audio system can represent — and never a sound-pressure level. It is why the hearing range test is not a hearing test in the medical sense and cannot diagnose hearing loss. And it is why the bass test measures nothing: it lets you hear where your equipment stops.

Privacy, briefly

No cookies, no tracking scripts and no advertising. Audio from your microphone never leaves your device. The site's host, Cloudflare, logs requests, including IP addresses, as every web host does. The privacy page has the detail.
